| Navigating Multiple Chemical Services and Hair Extensions | Keratin Treatments

Love it or hate it, Keratin Smoothing Treatments are here to stay. The allure of smooth sexy hair will always keep curly haired girls coming back for more. I say it is time to embrace it and talk about what to do when your client also has easilengths hair extensions.
Navigating multiple chemical services and hair extensions can be a tricky process. Let’s face it, we are in unchartered territory here. That’s why it is best to have a game plan before you start.
There are several types and brands of Keratin Treatments (Brazilian Blowout). How you move forward with easilengths is really all about how the product is used.
There are two general types of Keratin | Smoothing | Straightening treatments currently on the market. Basically, there are treatments that stay in the hair for 1-3 days and ones that are completely rinsed the day of service.
Stays in the Hair Treatment:
No shampooing for 1-3 days. What this usually means is that there is still product in the hair that needs to spend some time on the clients hair in order to work properly.
You cannot apply easilengths until the hair has been shampooed. Basically, the keratin product in the hair will not allow for a clean bond of the easitape. There is a good chance they easilengths will slip or even fall out after the first shampoo.
Stagger the appointments. Your client can get the color and Keratin Treatment in one day and then come back in 1-3 days for their easilengths hair extensions.
Rinses Out of the Hair Treatment:
If the keratin product you are using is thoroughly rinsed out of the hair then you are good to go with applying easilengths.
More often than not you are going to want to wait a couple of days before applying hair extensions. Many of the “rinse out that day keratin” still leaves a lot of residue behind that can compromise the integrity of the easitape.
My general rule of thumb: When in doubt, schedule it out.
Scenario 1 | The Newbie
You have a client that comes in and wants hair extensions and you up sell them on a Keratin Treatment and a color service.
What’s the correct way to navigate all of these services?
• Color
• Keratin (you may need to wait 1-3 days before doing the extensions)
• Extensions
You will always do the services in the order above. Depending up on the type of keratin you may have to wait a couple of days before doing the easilengths tape hair extension application.
Scenario 2 | The Comeback Kid
She’s back for more. This time she needs her roots done, extensions moved up and wants a little more blonde in the front.
Yes. This does happen. Now what to do?
• Remove easilengths
• Foil and color
• Keratin Treatment
• Wait appropriate time (1-3 days) come back for easilengths to be reapplied
Almost too easy. Right?
Client reaction: I never go anywhere without my easihair.
Yeah, we have those clients too.. You are going to be tempted to just go ahead and put the easilengths back in. You might get lucky. You might not.
If it is a dire situation you can recommend clip in hair extensions. I would recommend the easixtend or the easivolume. Keep in mind that the clips may leave some crimp marks where it attaches to the hair. Tell your client not to worry as these marks are not permanent and will be contained within an easilengths packet soon enough.
For the most part I have had great success with clients substituting clip in hair extensions for a couple of days until there hair is ready to have extensions applied again.
This is a great time to introduce permanent hair extension clients to the clip in’s. I like to think of them as the loaner car. Plus it is a great way to increase your retail dollars.
