< Blogs | Summer Extension Tips Part III | Woman to Woman Wisdom

DR Hanson
July 6, 2012

For our final interview in our series on Summer easiLength Extension Hair Care I reached out to Dallas Stylist Sonia Isaguirre for some firsthand extension experience as a woman who wears and applies hair extensions. The previous interview with Salon Owner Christopher Box was very thorough and very informative but he’s never walked a mile in a woman’s shoe while wearing easilengths.

DR: Hi Sonia! Thanks so much for meeting with me. I know how busy you get at the salon.
Sonia: No problem. Never too busy to help women understand the importance of extension hair care.

DR: Why is that?
Sonia: Well, hair extensions and I go waay back. I started wearing extensions before even going to cosmetology school.

DR: Really? So you’ve experienced extensions from every perspective?
Sonia: I have. From wearing them as a typical woman does, from applying them at the salon where I work, to wearing them now as a stylist.

DR: I think I hit the jackpot here!
Sonia: (Laughs)…maybe.

DR: Let’s go back in time for a moment.
Sonia: Okay…

DR: What’s one thing you wished your stylist told you the first time you got extensions, before you went to cosmetology school?
Sonia:….Don’t Fear the Brush.

DR: As in Hairbrush?
Sonia: (Nods)
DR: Why is that?

Sonia: Because incorrect brushing creates friction between the easiLengths extensions and the natural hair.
DR: And what does that friction do?

Sonia: Causes major frizz and horribly matted hair.
DR: Is that what happened to you your first go around with extensions?

Sonia: It was. I treated my extensions differently from my natural hair which was a huge mistake.
DR: Did your stylist warn you about the possible frizz and matting?

Sonia: Yes, but I was too scarred that I was gonna pull out my extensions that I barely brushed my hair. It’s now the first thing I tell my clients “Don’t Fear the Brush”. I can fix your extensions if you brush your hair correctly but there’s nothing I can do with matted hair other then cut them out.
DR: That sounds drastic! Please tell us how to correctly brush our easiLengths extensions to avoid the scissors!

Sonia: Well, you’ll need a boars hair bristle brush and you’ll need to brush your hair AND extensions with a slow and gentle stroke, remembering to never start at your root where the extensions are applied.
DR: Because that could interfere with the tape?

Sonia: Exactly! Look at you!
DR: This isn’t my first rodeo.

Sonia: Yee Haw! (Laughs)
DR: (Laughing) Let’s come back to the present now…Do you have any extension horror stories you’ve seen from behind the chair?

Sonia: More then I’d like to admit.
DR: Can you share one with us?

Sonia: Well, it’s kinda the same old story. Girl meets extensions, Girl meets a few cocktails, Girl re-enacts “The Little Mermaid” at the pool, Girl doesn’t follow water rules, Girl meets the scissors.
DR: I think I missed that old story growing up.

Sonia: Probably! (Laughs)
DR: What are the “water rules”?

Sonia: Well, with extensions, you have to be very, very careful when going in the pool or the ocean. It is summer and it’s going to happen but be mindful about your extensions.
DR: How so?

Sonia: Before leaving your house when wearing extensions and there’s even the slightest chance of getting into the water, shampoo and condition your hair, put in a little leave in conditioner, and pin up your hair.
DR: And if she does end up singing a little ditty from “Part of Your World”, what does she have to do save her extensions?

Sonia: Grab that leave in conditioner again or some Moroccan Oil and apply generously. But it really is in everyone’s best interest to avoid the water or dip in very gently now and then.
DR: Can you give us any more insider secrets to hair extensions for the summer?

Sonia: (pause) Invest in a good sun hat.
DR : Good advice. Well, Sonia, thank you for all of these juicy extension care nuggets!
Sonia: My pleasure!

And that concludes this summer’s hair extensions care tips. Big Thanks! To Christopher Box and Sonia Isaguirre. Take these sages advice and let your hair shine the way it was always meant to! Happy Summer!
